The 4-Step Rapid Diagnostic Workflow
When subscriber complaints begin arriving at the support desk, field engineers follow this rapid diagnostic procedure:
- Step 1: Check In-CoreMap Cluster Impacts: CoreMap automatically correlates which subscribers are disconnected to highlight the common upstream junction box or route.
- Step 2: Take OTDR Distance Measurement: The OTDR meter provides distance in meters (e.g., 2,450 meters from central office).
- Step 3: Route Distance Projection: Enter the OTDR distance into CoreMap to see the exact pole, landmark, and road segment where the break occurred.
- Step 4: Dispatch Nearest Splicing Crew: Send the precise GPS location to the field technician along with the exact cable specs and core color details.
Differentiating Between Fiber Breaks and Optical Degradation
A total break registers -Infinity dBm (no light), while optical degradation results in power dropping from -18 dBm to -29 dBm. Degradation is almost always caused by a tight bend (microbend/macrobend) or a contaminated optical connector.
With CoreMap's historical junction box records, engineers can inspect previous audit photos to see if a splice tray was overcrowded, allowing targeted inspections rather than random cable re-pulling.
